Former POWs liberated from Pakanbaroe

September 1945

In mid-September 1945, POWs were liberated from Pakanbaroe. The sickest men were the first to be airlifted from the island, and the following footage – held at the Australian War Memorial – shows Australian and British POWs preparing to leave Sumatra and, later, their arrival in Singapore. The films include footage of base camp at Pakanbaroe; cooking and washing facilities.

Please be aware that some of the images contained in these films may be distressing.
